The graphics lab machines are sort of outdated, I think only 500 MHz. However, the LAC machines are all new and shiny with 3.0 GHz P4 processors.
As for the legality, I know that the purpose of the graphics machines is so that people can run long jobs without eating up turing resources. As for the LAC computers, you are using it for a legitimate purpose. After all, you pay tution like everyone else and are entitled to your fair share of the computing resources that the school has to offer. Besides, no one will care if you lock a computer for a week or so.
