On awakening a sleeping lover

I slowly turn the doorknob and let myself into her room. Stepping softly over the clutter on the floor, wary of her roommate, I make my way to the side of her bed and look up at her slumbering face. Her eyes flit quickly behind closed lids, and for a few long seconds while I seek out her hand beneath the covers I have to wonder what she is seeing at that moment. Finally, her eyes snap open and I watch the natural disorientation of waking pass from them and she looks back at me, and slowly smiles.
