Ok, is this supposed to happen?

Hobbit ranger-ish character, 16 DEX, 20 points in slinging and 10 in burglary. (+5 +3) sling, (+4 +4) shots. Large kobold asleep two squares away.

I shot TEN shots at it and didn't hit a damn one.

Whatever they did to nerf archery in 19, I want to undo.

They nerfed archery in beta18, after Leon Marrick came back from a long sleep. Actually, does beta 19 actually exist? RGRA doesn't seem to mention it, nor does it seem to be up on http://runegold.org/sangband/

Am I correct in guessing that not only are you not hitting, but you don't always seem to aim at the right square? That's a new feature. I dislike it a lot. I'm playing beta 15c (15d is the newest). It was put out by a fan, after a very long disappearance by the maintainer. I think it's probably easier than beta13, as the shops stock *much* better things. It also has some tweaks. I posted a link in my journal a while ago. I can deal with a lot of things changing in beta18, but Archery wasn't broken; it was potent in the early game, but costs quite a bit to use, so you can't really abuse it. Now it's truly awful. You're accuracy (i.e. actually shooting at the correct square) increases with your skill/accuracy. Keep practicing is all I can suggest. Hobbits even have a bonus to using slings (along with a decent archery skill innate).

Eh, that character died. By the magic of Visual Studio, I've made any-difficulty quest available, and always appearing at one level deeper than player's deepest. We'll see how the 12 baby blue dragons on DL 1 go.
