The Idea and The Rules
21 categories are listed.
Choose a song for each one.
Each song must be by a different artist.
You may opt to alter the wording of one category. The new category must be somehow related to the old one.
For an added challenge, make the total playing time of your mix under 80 minutes.
This odd assortment of tunes will create a "Frankenstein mix."
Choose a song...
1. from the last CD you purchased
2. labeled blues or "the blues"
3. that gets you going in the morning
4. that's romantic
5. that's one of the first you remember hearing
6. you discovered from a film
7. from your favorite band or artist
8. from a band or artist that you don't really like except for this song
9. that's a lullabye
10. that makes you laugh
11. that's a really good cover version
12. that reminds you of school days
13. from an artist that you are embarrassed to admit you like
14. that's FUNKY!
15. for those quiet rainy nights
16. that no matter when you hear it, it makes you feel good
17. with the word "Look" in the title
18. from a member of the Dead Rocker's Society
19. that is your favorite from Elvis
20. randomly, that you feel fits
21. that gives you that old country feeling
And so, my list:
1. from the last CD you purchased: Goldfrapp - Twist (3:32). That's right, the song with the line, "Put your dirty angel face / Between my legs and knicker lace" (Ding!)
2. labeled blues or "the blues": Moby - God Moving Over the Face of the Waters (7:21). Ok, so it's not really blues, but I hadly have any blues and I like this song's sound. And it'll be one that makes me definitely break the 80 minute mark.
3. that gets you going in the morning: Jimmy Eat World - The Middle (2:45). Awesome motivation song; that and I really dig Jimmy Eat World.
4. that's romantic: Get Up Kids - I'll Catch You (4:20). The way my love goes, more often than not.
5. that's one of the first you remember hearing: Smashmouth - Walking on the Sun (3:26). This song and this song alone, the summer before 10th grade, was entirely responsible for my actually starting to listen to the radio.
6. you discovered from a film: Howard Shore - Bridge of Khazad Dum (5:57). It opens up with a powerful delivery of my favorite theme from the LotR soundtracks. Although, once I get the Two Towers and Return of the King discs ripped, I might pick one from those.
7. from your favorite band or artist: The Ataris - In This Diary (3:52). Do you realize how difficult it is to pick just one good song by The Ataris?!?
8. from a band or artist that you don't really like except for this song: Mindless Self Indulgence - Unsociable (4:24). Not sure why I keep so much MSI around.
9. that's a lullabye: Barenaked Ladies - When You Dream (5:19). Come on, you knew BnL would show up on my list somewhere. Again with the long songs, though.
10. that makes you laugh: Monty Python - I've Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts (2:46).
11. that's a really good cover version: Me First and the Gimme Gimmes - Rainbow Connection (2:18). I need more Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. It's a pity that they only have one track on the Rocky Horror Punk Rock Show.
12. that reminds you of school days: Weezer - Pink Triangle (3:58). It was my senior year when the dam broke and all the queers at my high school decided to come out of the closet. I was attracted to more than one of them, to varying degrees.
13. from an artist that you are embarrassed to admit you like: Dashboard Confessional - The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most (2:56). Ok, I'm not really embarrassed, but of all the cheesy emo on my computer, this is among the worst.
14. that's FUNKY: Ash - Burn Baby Burn (3:28). It's not funk per se, but I really like the intro and the rhythm.
15. for those quiet rainy nights: Eve 6 - Here's to the Night (4:09). It took me years to get past the point where I would cry anytime I heard this song - including at my senior prom.
16. that no matter when you hear it, it makes you feel good: Sugar Ray - Answer the Phone (4:00). It's not quite happy-peppy feelgood, but I like it.
17. with the word "Look" in the title: Less than Jake - Look What Happened (3:41). Man, this one's harder than you'd think, not aided by the fact that I already used Get Up Kids and CCR.
18. from a member of the Dead Rocker's Society: Nirvana - Come as You Are (3:39). The best Nirvana song I have is The Man Who Sold the World, which doesn't count because it's actually David Bowie. And I don't like Teen Spirit all that much.
19. that is your favorite from Elvis: Elvis Presley - All Shook Up (2:02). I don't like Elvis and this is the only one I have. I only have it because I needed it to audition with in high school, and I don't delete my music on general principle.
20. randomly, that you feel fits: Saves the Day - This is Not an Exit (3:55). Because I don't have Saves the Day on here yet.
21. that gives you that old country feeling: Credence Clearwater Revival - Down on the Corner (2:44). I can't say I've got all that much country in my collection, I'm just not a fan.
Total time: 80:32, shorter than I expected. Then again, Winamp has strange habits of not reporting total list time properly.
The moral of the story is, searching through 2000 some songs is pretty difficult.

Second of all, woo to all those who use "Look What Happened" for their "look" song. Bonus points if it was the first song that popped into your head when you read that bit of the meme, like it did me.
Because, yes, you only get bonus points for conforming to my way of life.
