No Dis-O.

So, there will be no DisOrientation as we know it this year. Here's the story as I interpreted it when Cal told me:

End of last year, Linde registers a party for Dis-O Friday (being tonight).

East registers Dis-O a few days later.

Social proceeds to disappear from all contact for the summer.

Fall comes and Social comes back saying they'll only fund one party each night, and Linde asked first, so we can't have Dis-O.

We say we'll put on the party without funding. Social says we have to register parties two weeks in advance.

The end.

Needless to say, this peeves me to no end, because I'm wondering how it would have turned out if it were, say, Linde and North competing over party night, but that's neither here nor there. Instead, I say we just find our own wackycrazy things to do tonight. If I recall correctly, there's a bowling place on Foothill that has cheap late-night bowling from something like midnight to 2 on Friday nights/saturday mornings. I'll be around today and/or tonight if anyone's interested, or if anyone's got anything else to do.

Experiments show that leaving the computer on all the time increases the electric bill by 50%. So this is not going to be on when I'm not actually here.

Wow. That's really nasty of social. East has been throwing Dis-O for how many years? I went when I was a prefrosh, and it seemed to be a really old tradition then.

Bowling? I'm so in...if I'm still awake.

As I proceed to say obvious things that I feel the need to say anyway:

(1) WTF. There have been two parties the same night for years. I get the idea that some people in Social decided that they were sick of providing funds for parties that weren't basically excuses for people to get drunk and decided to play God. Other people probably know more about this than I do.

(2) How can they be so harsh about those rules when two weeks ago, school hadn't started yet?

(3) And... and... if the party was registered already, and they decided that "registered with the hope of getting funding" doesn't count as "registered even if it has to be without funding", then that is just scary politics goin' on there.

I would be interested in bowling if it happens, probably, so add 1 to the tenative headcount I guess.

(1) Social has always funded only one party a night (or even weekend if I remember right). The Dis-O and Linde "thing" always confused me but I assumed it was because they were both non-alcoholic. I think the first year of the Linde thing though they did it without social funding. At least I remember it being a spur-of-the-moment the first year.

But in regard to the stuff in the original post, I have a feeling that if it was North and Linde or West and North or whatever were fighting for parties on the same night the same thing would have happened. It is sad that there's no Dis-O but I still don't believe that the entire campus is always out to get East. Each dorm has different shit it deals with because of the way Mudd works.

I'm pissed and want to fire nuclear missiles at social, but I'm secretly glad there's no party, because I'm not in the mood at all.

WTF?! That's completely messed up.

[identity profile] squirrelloid.livejournal.com 2004-09-03 12:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Someone should raise hell about this. This is destroying a damn long tradition. Or get me the email address of someone i should talk to, and i'll raise hell.

oh, and wtf? Isnt Dis-O on a night when campus is supposed to be dry anyway? (hence West traditionally following it with Wet Season the following night)

[identity profile] ywalme.livejournal.com 2004-09-03 01:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Linde's party is also dry.

a) also with the WTF? and b) yay bowling!

[identity profile] scholarjeff.livejournal.com 2004-09-03 01:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Definitely sucks... but as several other people have said, I don't think it's an act targeted specifically at East. It is kind of sad... but maybe we can have Dis-O later.

Bowling would be fun; I'd love to come if you'd have me.
