Ugh.

Apparently a monthly Metrolink pass is on the order of a hundred dollars. That's $25 a week... granted, in my car, that's cheaper than 450 mile worth of gas, but it also doesn't look like there's a single pass that would get me all the way from Claremont to Long Beach. The Metrolink (etc) webpage isn't very clear about how much gets you where...

Claremont to Long Beach would be Metrolink to Red to Blue lines, presumably (there might be buses, but the trains are usually nicer.) I know Metrolink tickets also give you a free ride on the Red Line, so I assume the passes do too, but that still leaves you with the Blue Line to deal with. Metro Rail passes (which are, I believe, valid on various buses as well) go for $52 a month.

Er. Sorry. You hit my "disgorge random transit trivia" reflex.

And having used it for a while, I can say that the Blue line is slower than it should be, as it has to deal with traffic. (At times, it stops and waits for lights before crossing streets.)

You'd be dealing with a fucking long commute from Mudd to Long Beach. Call it an hour (at least) from Mudd by car, and probably more like 1.5 - 2 hours by public transit. You'll really exhaust yourself going the public transit route, and car would be pretty tiring, too. If I were you, I'd look at getting something at least for during the week closer to Long Beach. Try the routes of course before you decide, but bear in mind that if it does take you 2 hours both ways, that makes a 13-hour day from leaving to getting back. That's doable, but not pleasant at all.
