I took your advice and looked up the California legalities concerning knives and swords. It seems that, if Sting falls under the category of dirk or dagger ("knife or other instrument with or without a handguard that is capable of ready use as a stabbing weapon that may inflict great bodily injury or death") then I may own it, and in fact carry it openly as long as it's not concealed. ("Knives carried in sheaths which are worn openly suspended from the waist of the wearer are not concealed.") So, legalities won't stop me - unless someone points me to a different L.A. County or Claremont statute that says otherwise.
