I just realized that the two loads of laundry that I neglected all day and am now folding were run completely without detergent.

They smell fine, at least....

I don't think that using detergent every time is strictly necessary. The clothes do retain a fair bit of it from wash to wash, and the process of being in the washing machine does a lot of the work of cleaning the clothes even without detergent (so long as you at least remember to turn the washing machine on...).
