From the British Medical Journal: Abstinence-only programmes don't work. Can I get a "no shit," over here? For that matter, can I get you to spread the word? (I almost wrote "If you're reading this right now, and oppose STIs and unplanned pregnancies, repost this link in your journal.")

That's about all I have to say over here. It's nearly my vacation time: I'll be in Colorado from the 5th to the 11th, and San Diego from the 13th to the 18th. Food?

Not that I'm disagreing with you, but in reading that I didn't see anything saying what their controls were. Were they comparing abstinence only programs (or programmes) to comprehensive sex-ed programs, or to no sex-ed program at all, or both? Maybe I'm just not so good at reading sciency things, but the only place where I saw them mention controls was in saying that their data were measured against "various controls." While I know that abstinence only programs are crap, I'd be really interested to know if they are better than no program at all, and how much better comprehensive programs are.

I'd also be vaguely curious to sit in on an abstinence only sex-ed class at some point since coming from California, the state that said "fuck you, we don't need your money" to the federal gov't, I've only experienced the comprehensive kind. Then again, it would probably just piss me off.

It was compared to no sex-ed at all, I believe.

I don't think I'd want to sit in on one, but what the heck goes on in an abstinence only class? It takes something less than 30 seconds to say "sex is bad, don't do it", what's the rest of the class time spent on? Watching horrifying videos of the results of sex? Learning about the benefits and sanctity of marriage?

Maybe they spend some time telling you that condoms don't work.

Also they probably go over the same stuff as a comprehensive program on "Hey, ever wonder how babies get made? NOW YOU KNOW. All right, get over your giggling. Okay, moving on..."

I've yet to be convinced that political support for sex education programmes(damn,I caught the British spelling bug), abstinence-only or otherwise, has much to do with population health benefits.

Give me a ring when you're in San Diego. I need to give Frances her Sinister Brain in a Jar, anyway.
