Buncha random crap

The tags list on this is going to be huge, I can tell...

I spent the first half of Spring Break in Claremont, which was good for me. Didn't get in quite as much shooting as I wanted because the Monday class was cancelled, but did get almost caught up on sleep, was introduced to a couple entertaining games, and hung out with awesome people I haven't seen in a while. My next trip down is in under three weeks, for Funball and Rocky, and will probably be the second-to-last significant visit I make for a while.

Getting back, I was not entirely with it and threw all my clothes in the laundry indiscriminately, neglecting to remember that I keep my iPod Shuffle attached to my pants when I'm travelling. The "shitshitshit" post a few days ago was my reaction as I started taking things out. I let it sit over the weekend, and was amazed when I plugged it into my laptop today and it self-ID'd just fine, even showing a complete playlist. It's now charging, and getting a playlist refill, and we'll see if my panic is as unjustified as I'd like.

I'm also considering the possibility of building myself a new computer, with the same general setup as this one, just with near-top-of-the-line hardware. I need to do my homework first, though, especially on things like setting up redundant RAID arrays, the feasability of dual-boot with Vista, and other junk like that. I'll be more serious about that as summer rolls around.

Sadly, a major reason for this is to that I can play Neverwinter Nights II, but it's also so that (whatever Linux distro I go with) can load programs in under a minute. Also on the gaming front, the list of games I want for the Wii has expanded even further, to include Super Paper Mario. It just looks so smexy! In games I already have, OpenRPG finally released 1.7.1, with dockable windows! This opens up double-screening, which will make things a lot easier, not having to compromise between map space and chat space.

I have new arrows! Sleek little Navigators, but they're still heavier than my old Vectors, and longer. I have the most ghetto clicker plate ever to make up for it, and I've also been getting some coaching on a shooting style that will theoretically help with that as well. I'll have to give up on the idea of never moving my sight bar, but it's also supposed to be the case that these arrows will behave better in the wind. The nocks for them were supposed to come in today, so tomorrow will be a fletching party. Also, sometime soon I need to get back into outdoor practice... I have just over a month before regionals, and it'd be nice not to embarass myself.

The problem with very nearly succeeding at cooking something is that it wasn't perfect, so I feel like I have to try again and fix it, but it's tasty so I can't get rid of it. And there's a lot of it, more than would be intelligent to eat on my own. It's probably for the better that I forgot to buy sugar when I was at the store today.

I love the Ars Technica system guides, just to put a suggestion out there for a starting point.

Oo, that IS useful.

Before you get too gung-ho about Vista, read this. It talks about the massive overhead Vista incurs in order to protect "premium content". I suspect XP will run NWN2 just fine.

I'm skeptical on some of that - it smacks of anti-Microsoft antagonism. Really the big reason I want Vista experience is to put it on my resume, though; nothing I want to actively do requires it.

I expect your shuffle should be just fine, with the possible exception of some cosmetic damage. Without a screen or a hard drive, they're pretty damn hardy.

Once it claimed to be charged, I unplugged it and put in headphones... and nothing. No lights, no sound except shortout-style clicks when the plug moves. Plugging it back into the computer, it's suddenly not registering there at all, not even as "unknown USB device".

I'm not optimistic.

Don't know what your department is like, but at my school it's perfectly normal, acceptable, and fairly common for people to leave food in the grad lounge for general consumption with or without an "eat me" sign.
