Silent movies had the creepiest villains

We're watching Metropolis in Hum this week. I'm highly amused... it seems that, plot and meaning aside, the major features of the movie are:

Wild eyes and wilder hair, a la light socket.
Smoke, flashy lights, and crossfades for FX.
People grabbing their chest when they're scared, or when they're in love. Or both.
Melodrama, melodrama, melodrama.

I'm actually staying awake and paying attention and jotting notes for this, too. Maybe this weekend's essay won't be too bad....
