Dream of a candle
Oct. 4th, 2003 01:13 pmI own contraband. More specifically, I have two smallish pillar candles, no more than three inches in any given direction. The problem is that, due to the administrative paranoia common to most colleges, they are not allowed to be burned indoors. Thursday night I spent some time on the balcony cradling one of them, watching the small but stubborn flame, but that's not the point.
At some point in my sleep, I realized I had one of these candles in front of me. The problem was, the candle had burned so deep into the pillar that no oxygen could reach the bottom of the cavity. Fortunately, the candle had compensated for this by not actually burning the wick that deep. The wick was several inches long, extending out of the top of the candle, but only the top quarter inch was burning, a sad lonely flame, desperate trying to hold out. The rest of the wick was happily performing its cappilary duties, just not bothering to burn.
Eventually I blew the candle out, and dreams continued as dreams do.
What's my point? I don't have one. I'm just reformatting all my music so that WinAmp plays them in the order they're in on the CD.
