memnus: Dragon with pigtails and glasses, saying "No sense... in a way that blows your mind?" (That makes no sense! (O&M))
What I'm working on at Laserfiche is a server that operates, not only through LF's client, but as a file server with a very specific protocol. As such, there are a few clients that we can go ahead and run to see if the thing is starting to work.

One of them is integral to Windows XP Explorer. I poke at it, point it to localhost, and it "helpfully" declares that the folder is invalid. I watch the conversation between the two, and figure that the response is leaving out some critical piece of information that it must really need - it is, after all, asking for rather a lot of data not technically wanted by the spec. I must have spent three hours poring through data on the client and the protocol, tearing my hear out over the utter uselessness of everything I found.

Finally I checked back over the spec one more time, for any minute detail that I might be missing.

...

I had one date being printed in the wrong format. A single datetime field that had to be in an entirely different format than the other two date listings in the response. A single variable to change, and it worked.

It was ass slow, but it worked. Man, Windows Explorer is a chatty little bitch.

In other news, I have a poster from Boink that apparently shipped somewhat faster than the first issue of the subscription itself. It's ... almost not porn. But, it's porn. Is it a bad omen if my room is not safe for work? Does it mean I'll have to try to work in the lounge? Will I get anything done next year, or just anyone?
