I realized as I was driving north today that I was very much dressed as myself.

Before I go further, I'd like to note that I don't particularly buy into the big deal about finding one's own look. There's just not enough variety in clothing to do that. But clothing can be a way of showing an allegiance to a way of living or being, and there's no denying that. I thought over myself and realized that everything I was wearing, that was showing, said something about me.

I got new shoes about as soon as I got home. I'm not sure what it was, but seeing them on the shelf the first thing that crossed my mind was "Emo shoes." They don't quite give the same impression as that when I wear them, but they're comfy so I wear them anyway. I like emo, or at least my impressions of it - horrible sappy pop-punk about relatively minor issues. I keep wondering if I could make an LJ icon out of these shoes.

Above the shoes, I'm wearing black jeans. They're a throwback to my techie days in high school, though I turned the cuffs up to honor the shoes, rather than let the cuffs crumple around them like I usually do. At the top of the jeans, my usual braided belt, buckle at my left hip (a habit I picked up on a whim in tenth grade, much to the vexation of anybody who's wanted to take my pants off).

Above the pants, I've got my green CS department t-shirt. Dark green has always been one of my favorite colors, and at least I think it's one of the colors I look best in. I identify very much as a Mudder, and am finally breaking into the core of the CS major, doing research this summer that's at least along the same lines as the work I want to do for my career.

...

No, there's no point to this. Robin flies in tomorrow. I need four days worth of things to do, before we can get back to Claremont.
